BRASILIA PE HOSTS THE “KALAYAAN” WEBINAR IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 123 RD ANNIVERSARY OF THE PHILIPPINES’ DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

BRASILIA, 13 JUNE 2021 – Brasilia PE organized an online lecture/webinar for its Cultural Diplomacy activity entitled "Kalayaan: Webinar on the Philippine declaration of independence and related events" on 13 June 2021. Dr. Arnel E. Joven, the chairperson of the History Department for the University of Asia & the Pacific, was the guest speaker of the Embassy’s webinar. The event was part of Post’s activities for the celebration and commemoration of the 123rd Anniversary of the Declaration of Philippine Independence.

Charge d'affaires, ad interim Leilani S. Feliciano on the opening remarks

The webinar started with the participants singing the Philippine National Anthem led by the emcee Mr. Martin Vicencio, the Embassy’s Cultural Officer. Charge d’affaires, ad interim, Leilani S. Feliciano gave the welcoming remarks to those present in the zoom webinar as well as those watching from Post’s Facebook page. CDA Feliciano noted that the Philippine Revolution and related events that led to June 12, 1898, was one of the most significant events in the country’s history. She also noted that the Philippines was the first Asian country to have become independent from its European colonizers.

Dr. Joven’s lecture centered on the June 12, 1898 declaration of independence by the Philippines from the Spaniards and past events that led to the events of June 12, 1898. Dr. Joven also gave insights not known by most such as other foreign entities (the British Royal Army and Japanese Imperial army to name a few) docked in Manila Bay and many more. Dr. Joven also tackled other interesting topics in the webinar such as the parts of the Philippine flag that was held by Emilio Aguinaldo during June 12 as well as the food selection during the September 29, 1898 banquet during the ratification of the declaration of independence.

The event had a brief Question and Answer portion before CDA Feliciano gave her closing remarks to conclude the webinar.

The webinar was attended by the Filipino Community in Post’s jurisdiction as well as some attendees from the DFA Home Office and residents from the Philippines. END
