Filipinos in Suriname meet PH Ambassador
PARAMARIBO, SURINAME: Ambassador Marichu Mauro met with members of the Filipino community in Suriname on 29 July 2018 in the capital city of Paramaribo.
There are about 500 Filipino skilled workers that live and work in Suriname in the medical, hospitality, and other service industries, as well as in mining, logging and fishing sectors.
The meeting was an opportunity for Ambassador Mauro to check on their well-being and answer their concerns on various issues from employment contracts to residency.
Filipino workers in Suriname are well regarded and the Surinamese government is very interested in hiring more Filipino skilled workers in the country.
Ambassador Mauro, who was in Paramaribo to present her credentials to Surinamese President Desiré Bouterse, assured the Filipino community that their welfare is important to the Philippine Embassy in Brazil and that despite the distance, every effort will be given to them should they require assistance.
