Asean Committee in Brasilia Calls On Brazilian Lower House
Philippine Ambassador to Brazil Jose D.R. Burgos joined the other Heads of Mission of ASEAN Member-States in Brasilia during the Courtesy Call on Deputado Pedro Vilela, Chairman of the Commission on External Relations and National Defense (CREDN) of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies on October 04. The courtesy call was organized by the Philippine Embassy in Brasilia.
The seven ASEAN Member-States present in Brasilia are Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Viet Nam. They are collectively known as the ASEAN Committee in Brasilia (ACB) as approved by the ASEAN Secretary General in February 2013.
Congressman Vilela expressed his interest on the ASEAN organizational system in comparison with MERCOSUL (Southern Common Market). He also inquired on how the Brazilian Congress could help ASEAN.
The ACB discussed the various ways that the Brazilian Congress could promote ASEAN in the crafting of policy and legislation. Ambassador Burgos, in particular, suggested constant interaction and meetings between ACB and the Parliament.
In response to the Ambassador’s suggestion, Congressman Vilela offered to invite the ACB to relevant seminars and to arrange meetings with other members of Congress and other senior government officials.
