Philippine Embassy hosts Annual ASEAN Food and Cultural Festival

As part of the ongoing celebration of the 46th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the Philippine Embassy in Brasilia, as current Chair of the ASEAN Committee in Brasilia (ACB), hosted the annual ASEAN Food and Cultural Festival on September 14.

The event featured exhibits on ASEAN, as well as the ASEAN Member Nations represented in Brasilia, namely: Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.   Each ASEAN country showcased tourism sites and artifacts, food and handicrafts native to its country.

The Philippine Embassy featured in its exhibit tourist spots in the Philippines, such as the Palawan Underground River, Boracay, the Banaue Rice Terraces, Bohol Chocolate Hills, and handed out It's More Fun in the Philippines! brochures to guests.  The booth also featured Filipiniana formal wear to showcase Philippine textiles.  Philippine pearls, native baskets and woven placemats, and dried mangoes were featured at the handicrafts booth.  Filipino food such as pansit and lumpia, adobong manok, empanada, arroz caldo, and palamig were served at the Philippine food booth.

During the cultural programme, Philippine Ambassador to Bazil and ACB Chair Eva G. Betita introduced ASEAN to the Brazilian public and explained the important role of the ASEAN Committee in Brasilia in fostering ASEAN-Brazil relations.  Each country presented a sample of its culture.  The Philippine Embassy, in partnership with the Filipino community, showcased the singkil dance ensemble.  The show also featured Songs of ASEAN, where each country performed a song in the national language, a coloring competition for children, and an ASEAN quiz consisting of questions about the ASEAN as an organization and the Member-Nations represented in Brasilia.

More than 1,000 people attended the successful event, including high officials from the Ministry of External Relations, such as Undersecretary General for Political II Ambassador Maria Edileuza Fontenele Reis, Ambassador Mauro Brasil de Holanda, Director of the Division of ASEAN and Timor Leste, Ambassadors from five continents, officers and staff of the diplomatic corps, and Brazilian nationals.  END
